A Wordpess Silo Plugin When Your Not Having A Silo Plugin

What makes a good silo or themed site/blog in terms of SEO? That it is actually a silo structure would be a great help to start one would think!

Well the guys over at http://www.virtual-silo.com/ have attempted to build a silo plugin for wordpress but to be honest have done a pretty poor job.

A typical silo or theme structure runs all pages off a category page or index, thus the name silo.

What these guys have come up with is to link one category page to the next and then eventually back to the next category. Sound like a silo to you? I don’t think so.

However the biggest problem with this type of set up is the delivery of even PageRank throughout your site. With a normal silo structure that PageRank flows into the category index and then evenly out through all the category pages.

In this model the first page linked from the category index will get a lovely boost of PageRank but then what happens to page 2, 3 4, 10, 15? No PageRank!

So really, what you end up with is a non siloed site with less PageRank than usual going to your older pages.

I guess I would have to say that the silo plugin is definitely not for me.

  1. SEO for wordpress is an interesting combo. Read about it here:

  2. Yes, I agree, by making links like this it cannot produce silo type. But I visualize like stacked heaps, because each category node will be the meeting point between each heaps. Is that right?
